Round 1 Club Newsletter

Thanks to everyone that came down and supported our men’s team against Knox in round 1.

It was a very successful night on and off the field with two big wins and a bumper crowd hanging around well into the night.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Easter break and look forward to seeing you all down the club soon.
SENIOR MEN
With the retirement of players and some players venturing overseas this season was going to be a transition year for us.

What this does is give more opportunities to some of our younger players who debuted last year and also an opportunity for some who are yet to debut.

We set about recruiting for these losses and I’m really happy with who we recruited. Josh Matthews, Jacob Bell and Toby Godfrey from Nth Ringwood, Brad Stewart from Sth Croydon, Brooklyn Gebal- Lamb has returned to the club after a stint at Nunawading and with Mitch and Jay Annett. All have complemented our list and fitted in nicely with our playing group.

It is going to make and exciting time for the club and one I’m really looking forward to.

Round one saw us take on Knox on Saturday night. We were debuting 5 new players.
Josh, Jacob Bell, Brad, Brooklyn and also Jacob Williams who was part of our U19 team a couple of years ago.

Although we have played Knox on numerous occasions. They were going to be a different looking side with a new coach and game plan.

The game started at a hot pace as Knox looked to start the game with speed on their ball movement. Whether they were going to able to maintain this over the game was the big unknown.

We slowly started to work our way into the game. Our pressure was good around the contest as we were able to force turnovers and move the football the way we wanted.
After half time we really put our mark on the game as we started to control the contest and get good field position. This in turn gave our forwards opportunities to put scoreboard pressure on.

We were able to run the game out strongly and finished with a 55pt win.

We head to Templestowe after the Easter break.

Great to back for the 2023 season

After a solid pre-season we enter round one with good numbers and a new look team. With a good mix of youth and experience our line-up for the 2023 season is exciting.

Welcome to the Redbacks: Josh Brown, Jackson Kean, Toby Godfrey, Mitch and Jay Annett.

What a great challenge for our first game, coming up against last year’s premiers in Knox and with Jamie Atkinson playing his 200th game for the club it was an ideal opportunity for us to get off to a good start with a win. It was always going to be a very good test for us and one we were all really looking forward too.

The first quarter our pressure was excellent early allowing us to lock the ball in our forward half for most of the quarter which saw recruit Toby Godfrey kicking the first goal to get us off to a good start. Our backs where solid keeping Knox goalless for the quarter and we went into the first change with a 15pt lead.

The next two quarters saw a very even contest with neither team able to break away. We knew Knox weren’t going to go away and that it was going to take a 4-quarter effort from everyone if we were going to take the points. The pleasing sign for us was every time Knox started to get a roll on, we were able to stay composed and respond back and we maintained our lead into the final quarter.

The last quarter Luke Haddock got on top in the ruck allowing our mids to get first use out the middle. We finished the game off strong kicking 4 goals to 2 in the last to extend our lead and eventually running out 29pt winners to get our season off to a good start.

Looking forward to our round two clash against last year’s runners up Templestowe in two weeks’ time after the easter break.

NETBALL
The 2023 netball EFNL season commenced last Friday night 31st March. This year Ringwood Football & Netball Club has fielded three teams. Within those three teams we have welcomed 17 new players and we couldn’t be happier.

We had a few training sessions in late February all through till the end of March to get to know one another and become closer as a community.

The girls have made a massive effort to come to trainings each week and it has been a lot of fun. Our skills have improved throughout that time and the teams have bonded very well and are working towards excellence on the court.

We just played round 1 of the season, it wasn’t the way we would have liked to start the season with all three teams suffering a loss but it has made us want to work harder to become better. We have the whole season ahead of us to train and correct our mistakes to get the win. The girls have a great mind set for the season ahead of them and they will work towards success.

There will be training sessions held during the weeks before games so that we can perform the best we can.

The season has 17 rounds and 3 finals. Our game times will be posted each week along with when and where we are playing.

Come down and cheer the teams on each week. We would really love having you there and appreciate your support and encouragement.

Go Redbacks!

JUNIOR REDBACKS
Junior Club Report
The juniors were very excited to finally kick off the 2023 season last Sunday. After a really good pre-season by all teams, the players (and parents) were ready to go! We have teams in the Under 8, 10, 14 and 16 divisions and we are excited to welcome 39 new players who pulled on a Redbacks jumper for the first time for Round 1!

It was great to see all our players and their families at the club for our Jumper Presentation and Season Launch. New families enjoyed meeting each other and we enjoyed seeing our players presented and hearing from the coaches.

We’d like to thank our major sponsors, Ringwood RSL and Choklits Child Care. Please support the people who support us.

Round 1 Results:

U8 vs Blackburn: This age group do not score but there we many Ringwood goals and the kids showed great skills for their first ever footy match! The 9v9 format allows the players to get plenty of touches and learn how the game works. Great work U8s!

U10 vs Nth Ringwood: Once again, this age group does not officially score. It was a tough match for our U10s who are tackling and playing on the larger ground for the first time. The second quarter was their best, with them being far more competitive and showing that in passages of play they could move the ball well.

U14s vs Noble Park:
Ringwood: 5.5.35
Noble Park: 16.22.118

U16s vs Knox
Ringwood: 8.8.56
Knox: 4.10.34

A huge thank you to the coaches, team managers, trainers, runners and the many other people who assist to help game days run smoothly. We could not do it without you!

This season we have a number of players who will be playing their 50th  or 100th game. In Round 2, we’ll be celebrating Xavier Riley and Archie Christie playing 100 junior EFNL games. We congratulate these players on this special milestone in their junior football career and look forward to watching them play many more games for Ringwood.
