Round 16 Newsletter

Thanks to everyone who came down to our past players and officials day last Saturday, it was great to see the rooms packed all day long with a lot of familiar faces reminiscing about their playing days.

On the day we heard from 2013 under 19s coach Mark Matthews and captain Daniel Jordanov on their undefeated season 10 years ago that culminated in a fantastic Grand Final win over Boronia. We also heard from 2013 under 15s coach Rick George and captain Harry George on their Premiership 10 years ago against Lilydale. It was great to see many of our current senior players celebrate this premiership success 10 years ago.

We also awarded life membership to club great Brett Anderson. Brett played over 200 games for the club and has been involved in the club since 1977. It was great to hear Brett speak so fondly of his time at the club and how much the club meant to him. Thanks to committee member and club champion Paul Gough for MCing Brett’s presentation with some fantastic stories of his playing days.

We were able to get a majority of our life members in the room on the day too. Thank you to all our life members for their incredible service to our club over many years! A photo of all our current life members who were in attendance is below.

It’s not long until we’re back celebrating a new life member to the club, with Kieran Hill set to play his 200thclub game in round 18 and therefore be awarded life membership. K-Hill is a long standing servant of our club and has given his all to our club over many years. We will be awarding and celebrating his 200th game and his life membership after the game at 6:30pm on August 12th in the clubrooms after our game against Waverley. Please join us to celebrate a great club person!

After our round 18 game against Waverley, we will also be conducting a partial vote count for our reserves, seniors womens and senior mens teams. All supporters are welcome to attend. This will begin at 7pm and you will have the chance to hear from the coaches on the year that was. The second half of the votes will be read and awards presented at our presentation night on Thursday September 28th at out major sponsor, The Coach. All Platinum and Gold members will also receive complimentary drinks (beer and wine) and a meal on the partial vote count night, this will be communicated to each member individually.

FINALS

The EFNL have advised that we will be again hosting finals this year. We will be hosting 6 finals over 3 weekend (Saturday and Sunday) starting on August 19th and ending on September 3rd.

SENIOR MEN
This game was going to be a great challenge for our young group against the top of the ladder Boronia, and with a couple of late withdrawals, it was going to be an even greater challenge.

We started the quarter well, as we applied good pressure around the contest. Kicking the first goal. We were getting our chances to keep scoreboard pressure. We just didn’t make the most of them. Boronia did and we went to the first break 2 goals down.

The second quarter didn’t pan out the way we wanted. Boronia started to win the ball out of stoppage and our undersized defence was under pressure. Boronia took advantage and piled on 6 goals to be 41 points up.

The second half could of been a real blowout. To the lad’s credit, they really dug deep In the third and fourth quarters. They continued to take the game on when they got their chance. They continued to keep competing and started to not let Boronia keep things on their terms.

We were able to have the same amount of scoring shots in the second half.  While we went down by 41points. I was really proud of the player’s efforts. The fact we had an undersized defence and two late changes showed great character.

We take on East Burwood to try and keep our season alive.

NETBALL
The White team this week struggled to get a team to take the court. Having to find three fill ins to make a team but only getting two leaving them to only playing with 6 players the entire game. They started off strong in the first 2 quarters keeping it pretty even till half time. Fatigue set in for the girls and changes in positions made it even harder to stay even. Unfortunately in the last quarter they just ran out of legs and energy and park orchards just ran over the top of them. They play top of the ladder in their last game of their season so hopefully can get a win.

The red team had a massive game last week playing against the top of the ladder, Waverley blues. They had a cracking game only losing by 3 goals in the last quarter. Leading goal scorer Kiara Jackson scoring 10 for the game really helped them stay even. The girls played an amazing game keeping on par with the Waverley Blues till the last quarter. The girls work hard at trainings and are coming together and finally working better as a team. They have one more game against Croydon north who sit 7th just above Ringwood. Fingers crossed they can finish the season off with a win.

Black came up against Norwood who sit 6th on the ladder currently. The black team struggling each week to get a team to take the court managed to get 6 players to take on Norwood. The girls struggled with positions which made it hard to have a consistent game. They came up against Norwood who had 7 players and 1 on the bench. The girls played hard until the very end. Leading scorer for this game was Lilly Dowling with 14 goals added to her name. The girls play one more game against Montrose who is 2nd on the ladder.
