Round 2 Newsletter

After a busy first two weeks, we are well and truly into footy season. With a night game to open the season, our first social function, the junior season kicking off and our three netball teams hitting the court for the first time, it’s full steam ahead at Ringwood at the moment!

There’s a lot going on at the moment, so we’ve got a snapshot of what has been happening and what is on for the next few weeks below.

Importantly, we’re off to Heathmont this Friday night in our ANZAC clash. This is always a great night, so make sure you get down in your Ringwood club gear to cheer the boys on! The game begins at 7pm at HE Parker Reserve. We need your support for our traditional local clash.

ROUND ONE NIGHT GAME

The night game against Knox was a roaring success with a massive crowd coming down to Jubilee to watch both our seniors and reserves score big wins. After the game, the rooms were packed all night as we had a band getting everyone up to dance and have a great night.

We also celebrated Jamie Atkinson’s 200th club game with his induction as a life member of the Ringwood Football & Netball Club.

We owe a big thank you to our team of incredible volunteers who made the night such a success.
After such a successful night game, we are going to do it again on Friday June 30th against local rival Heathmont. We expect this one to be even bigger than round one, so make sure that you put it in your diary!

SENIOR DEBUTS (A LOT OF UNDER 19s!)

In the first two rounds, we have seen five players make their senior debuts for the club, including two of our 2022 under 19s players. Combined with the seven under 19s players who made their senior debut last season, that makes for an impressive nine under 19s players who have made their senior debut in the past two years! Young gun Noah Adkins has been named in the best in both reserves games so far this year, including a best on ground on the weekend, so we may not need to wait much longer to see a 10thsenior debutant from our under 19s ranks! We have also seen 2021 Under 19s player Brooklyn Gebel-Lamb make his senior debut after spending 2022 at Nunawading.

Those players who have made their senior debuts this season are:
  • Jacob Williams (Under 19s)
  • Luke Haddock (Under 19s)
  • Brooklyn Gebel-Lamb (Under 19s 2021)
  • Jacob Bell (North Ringwood)
  • Josh Matthews (North Ringwood)
  • Brad Stewart (South Croydon)

SENIOR MEN
Round two saw us take on Templestowe at Templestowe.

We started the game well as we were able to move the ball quick and put their defence under pressure, which resulted in us kicking the first two goals.

Templestowe were able to kick the next two goals from simple mistakes which would be the theme of the day.

The rain started to come down which slowed the game down and brought their strong on ballers into the game. They began to dominate around the contest which made it difficult to get the game back on our terms.

When we were able to get control of the play, we invariably gave the footy back to them. Which makes winning game’s difficult. 18 turnovers in their front half tells the story. Especially in a low scoring game.

We continued to keep having a crack which was pleasing, especially when we had no ruckman halfway through the third term.

We ended up going down by 32 pts.

We will learn and bounce back from the weekend and look forward to our next game against Heathmont in our annual ANZAC eve game.

SENIOR WOMEN
Our senior womens team begin their season in division one on Saturday when they take on Chirnside Park at Jubilee at 10:40am. This will be the first game for new coach Mark Clare, having taken the reigns from Premiership coach Darren Ashcroft.

With several new players to the team this season, we’re excited to see what the year holds for this team that has been so consistently strong over such a long period of time.

With 2022 captain Zoe Cant missing a portion of the season with travel, she has stepped down from the captaincy and in her place Grace Ward and Chrissy Lagos have been appointed co-captains, with Elyce Barbin appointed as Vice-Captain. Congratulations to Grace, Chrissy and Elyce who set a fantastic standard within our playing group and will continue to build the team moving forward!
RESERVE MEN
After a good start to the season in round 1 knocking off last year premiers in Knox, we headed to Templestowe to take on last year’s runner up.

We welcomed back veteran wingman Kieran Hill after a year off and joining him for his first game for the Redbacks was Jay Annett who has come across from Merryvale.

We went into the game with a real belief we could get the job done, we started well with Toby Godfrey kicking the first goal of the game. From there though Templestowe had most of the play taking a 9 point lead into the first change.

The second quarter was an even contest for most of the quarter but a late goal to Templestowe allowed them to extend their lead going into the main break 13 points

The second half was a different story. Templestowe’s intensity and work rate lifted across the ground, which didn’t allow us to get the ball out of their forward half. Templestowe extended their lead in both the 3rd and 4th quarters kicking 5 goals to 1 and eventually running out with a comfortable 44-point win.

We will regroup and bounce back next week as we travel to HE Parker to take on Heathmont.

Go Redbacks!

NETBALL
We played round 2 this week. Our white team played against Park Orchards and unfortunately had another loss. Their third quarter was their best by far as they were not out scored by the other team. The girls are getting to know how each other play and forming a strong bond as a team. Jessica Morgan stepped up this week and played her role as GS. All her shots were very long range and we are excited to see how much she will improve throughout the season.

Our black team played against the other Park Orchards team and only lost by four goals! All the girls played their roles and put in so much effort. Unfortunately, one of their players came off injured early in the second quarter which put a spanner in the works, all the girls stood up and played their very best. They are looking forward to round 3 next week to get their first win on the board.

Finally, our red team played against Norwood and got the first win for the Redbacks by only one point! Amali North and Kiara Jackson both scored 9 goals each and lead the girls to the win! The whole team played so well together considering all of them have never played together. We are all excited to see how the Red team goes throughout the year and hoping for another win next week.

Get down for round 3 this coming Friday and support the girls. I hope to see some smiling faces on the sidelines.

Go Redbacks

Special mention to our new under 16s team who are currently sitting on top of the ladder in A division after a 2-0 start, meaning that they are currently the best placed under 16s team in the entire EFNL – what a great sign for the future of the club!!
