Round 4 Newsletter

On Saturday we hosted our annual ladies day luncheon with the room packed with nearly 100 people!

It was great to see so many members of our club, from current players, to life members, to junior parents and sponsors, it was a great day celebrating the women of our club. Thanks to Abbey Jordanov, Zoe Hill, Zoe Cant, Ebony McVea and Grace Ward for making the day happen! Thanks also to our guest speaker on the day, the Head of the WNBL, Christy Collier-Hill.

On the field our seniors scored a big win against Upper Ferntree Gully to bounce back into the top 5, with young forwards Brooklyn Gebel-Lamb and Josh Meerkotter combining for 7 goals – a great sign for our future!

We welcomed debutant Noah Adkins in his first senior game for the club. Noah is the 10th under 19s player to debut for the club in the past two seasons. He looked right at home playing senior football and is one to watch in the future. Noah was presented his playing jersey by club champion and current committee member, Paul Gough.

Our senior women’s team went down to 2022 Grand Finalist Park Orchards, but despite the loss there were several promising signs – one big one was the form of new player Olivia Marsham. Olivia scored four goals from the midfield and was named best on ground for the second time in two games. At only 20, Olivia is set to be the next big thing in our senior women’s team!

Our reserves went down to Upper Ferntree Gully and will be looking to bounce back against a strong Basin outfit this Saturday.

Our netball teams battled it out on Friday, with White beating East Ringwood, while the Black and Red teams lost. Make sure that you get down and support our netball teams on Friday nights.

On the juniors front, our 16s currently sit second in A division after a strong start to the season, while our under 14s got a great win against rivals Heathmont on the weekend! Our under 10s took on Bayswater and our under 8s took on Mitcham. Thanks to senior player Mitch Brereton for heading down to watch the under 10s to cheer on his number 1 fan and under 10s player Nate!

SENIOR MEN
We were looking to bounce back from our loss the previous week. We made a real effort to play with freedom and to take our chances.

We were a bit slow to start as Upper came out of the blocks fast with some good transition from their back half, to kick the first two. We slowly started to settle into our brand of footy, as we were able to get our hands on the footy and move it the way we wanted. Unfortunately our raider was a bit off as we kicked 3 goals 4 to go 4 points up at quarter time.

We were able to get complete control of the game in the second quarter as we were able to get plenty of the footy. Our pressure was through the roof, especially in our forward half. This resulted in us having 11 shots at goal to be 39 points up at halftime.

The second half was a great defensive effort as we kept Upper to 8 shots at goal. When the final siren sounded we were 81 points up.

The continued improvement of our young core group over the last few weeks has been really pleasing and our supporters should be excited by this young group.

We head out to The Basin this weekend.

Go Redbacks!!

NETBALL

This week in round four there were a few changes to our three teams. The efnl watched closely the past three rounds and decided we belonged in the wrong sections. They readjusted the fixtures and put us in the correct ones. This makes things little more even and gives our girls a better chance at winning a few games.

The white team had a late one playing at 9:15pm against East Ringwood, with an early out due to an injury in the first quarter the girls had to readjust and play with seven. The girls were fatigued towards the end of the game however they pulled through and got their first win for the season. The defence held up against some great shooters from East Ringwood, as well as the mid court bringing the ball down nicely to the goal shooters Nicole and Jessica with 33 goals combined.

The black team played against Norwood this week, starting with a lead of a couple of goals and keeping that lead for almost three quarters. Norwood then gained a few goals which had them in front and they held that lead until the end. Unfortunately, the girls losing by 3 goals. Having their main shooter out for this round they had to rotate between the girls and managed to have a top scorer in Jemma dysktra with 14 goals to her name. The girls are keen to tale the court next week for round 5 and hopefully get a win.

The red team played against Nunawading this week. They had a couple of key players out and found some other girls to fill in. It was a little bit of struggle to keep up with Nunawading. However, they held them back in the first 2 quarters and didn’t let them get ahead to much but in the last half Nunawading sprinted ahead and managed to win by a large margin. Hopefully next week the girls are back with a full team and get play at their best and get a win again.

Go Redbacks!!
