Senior Men

We ventured out to a wet and drizzly Batterham Reserve and the game turned out to be a wet slog but a very memorable one. We were debuting three new players which is always exciting. Mitch Heckley, Jett Latchford and Rodney Op.  The first quarter was a real slog as we slowly adjusted to the conditions. We were able to get the first goal on the board from good pressure but theb Basin started to get their handball game going from half back and finished with the last couple of goals to go 3pts up at the first break. The Basin started the second qtr controlling the game around the contest and started to get repeat entries. To our back half’s credit, they were able to defend really well and as the quarter went on we were able to swing the control back in our favour and finished with the last two goals to go 2 pts up at half time. The third quarter was a real arm wrestle with the game being played between the arcs with both teams defensive units controlling the game. There were only two scoring shots for the quarter which were both points. We went to the last break 2 pts up. The last quarter would be a memorable one for the us as a team. It didn’t start the way we would have liked as the game opened up, as we allowed The Basin to kick the first 3 goals to open up a 17 Pt lead in wet conditions. What would unfold from the 19min mark would be something to remember. Having kicked 4 goals for the game We had to double our score to get in front in wet conditions. To the boys credit they did. They started to win the crucial one on ones and we were able to get the ball forward and put pressure on their defenders. As the final siren sounded we were 3 pts up and recorded one of our clubs best victories. The win showed amazing character and showed if we keep backing each other and trusting how we play no matter the situation, anything is possible. We now look forward to Mulgrave for our first home game for the year. Go Redbacks! Brett RoweSenior Coach

Reserves

Finally having the long awaited 2022 season here we kicked off the day appointing our new Co Captains Arron Boone and Jaime Pope, a certainly well-deserved feat by both of them who certainly have the respect of their peers and I know personally will do a great job leading the team each week.  The game got off to a slow start for our fellas only being able to score 1.1 in the first half to The Basin’s 5.8, it was a wet and slippery ball which we seemed to be overusing by hand, and The Basin at that stage playing better footy getting the ball forward with better results.  After half time our boys were clearly on the back foot only having two rotations on the bench, all I could ask is that we were smarter with the footy and showed some real heart and determination to not let the game get out of hand. Although the scoreboard showed that The Basin continued to control the scoreboard in the second half, those who were watching would have seen better use of the ball, more control and time spent in our forward half which we unfortunately couldn’t capitalise on. As the game went on our fellas began to gel together a bit and started to link up better, which although came at a loss shows promising signs that as the reserves tart to get to training and play with each other more it will come together. Our group has a lot of inclusions from the younger fellas and a number of blokes who may not have trained as much as they should have and have yet to reach their full potential; I’m confident the more we work together that we will see some good results and I’m hopeful this will come sooner rather than later.  Final score The Basin 11.13.79Ringwood 1.2.8Go Redbacks!! Jamie “Akka” Atkinson Reserve’s coach

Junior Redbacks

The juniors are looking forward to kicking off their 2022 season this Sunday. We have teams in the Under 9, 12 and 13 sections and we are excited to welcome 15 new players who will be pulling on a Redbacks jumper for the first time! This week we held our jumper presentations after training and it’s great to see our players so keen to pull on a Redbacks jumper and feel a sense of belonging to our club.  We also have a number of players who will be playing their 50th game this season. In Round 1 we’ll be celebrating Oliver Williams’ 50th game and in Round 2 we will see Darcy Storey run through his 50-game banner. We congratulate these players on this special milestone in their junior football career and look forward to watching them play many more games for Ringwood.  We began pre-season earlier this year and it’s been great to see the kids reconnecting with their footy friends, increasing their fitness, and improving their ball skills. A huge thanks goes to Jake, Dean, Clay and Zoe for giving up their time to coach our kids. We look forward to sharing the results of these matches in our next newsletter update.
